Bubbles and More | Creating a Safe and Serene Bath Time Experience

Greendigo has answered some of the most important questions relating to baby bath time.

Read on for some foamy inspo!

When should you transition from sponging to bathing?

It is advisable to give your newborn baby a sponge bath until the umbilical cord stump has fallen off and healed. This generally occurs after three weeks, but sometimes takes longer. Until then, use a soft washcloth, a bowl of water, and gentle baby wash.

How often should you bathe your newborn?

It is not necessary to bathe your newborn baby every day. Aim for a minimum of three times a week. By doing so, you’re keeping your baby clean and preventing their sensitive skin from drying out. Having said this, make sure to clean the diaper area thoroughly.

Which body part should you wash first?

Start off with your baby's head and face, gradually working your way down to the chest, stomach, and other body parts. This technique is great as it will keep rinsed areas from getting soapy again and reduces the chances of soap getting into their eyes.

When should you schedule bath time?

Pick a time that is right for you. With morning baths, your baby is more likely to be alert. Evening baths, however, are a good precursor to bedtime. Just remember to wait for your baby’s tummy to settle after a feed.

What are some bath time essentials?

1.   Baby Tub - Opt for a plastic tub, bucket, or wash basin. Fill it with around 5cm of water.

2.   Water Temperature - Regulate the water to ensure it’s neither too hot nor too cold. A recommended temperature is 98.6° to 100° F (37° to 38° C).

3.   Soap - Use a natural baby soap or shower gel made from ingredients such as aloe vera or shea butter.

4.   Shampoo - Choose a mild shampoo that is free of fragrance.

5.   Lotion - Restore moisture to your little one’s skin with a gentle baby lotion.

6.   Plastic cup – Use a small plastic cup to gently rinse off your baby.

7.   Hooded Towel - Invest in an organic cotton hooded towel that will keep your baby warm and dry after a bath.

8.   Toy – Let your baby play with a toy that has a firm grip and is easy to clean.

What are some tips for ensuring a safe and serene bath time experience?

1.   Develop a routine by scheduling baths at the same time each day. You can use bath time as a segway to bedtime.

2.   Make sure the bathroom door is shut to avoid a breeze hitting your baby’s bare body.

3.   Adopt a gentle approach to cleansing. Newborn skin is delicate and does not require intense exfoliation.

4.   Never leave your baby unattended in a basin or tub. Always have one hand behind your baby’s head for support.

5.   Wrap them immediately in a dry towel and apply baby lotion and diaper cream, accordingly.
