Best Practices for Washing Baby Clothes | Keep Your Little One’s Wardrobe Clean and Safe

Shopping for baby clothing is fun.

Caring for them, not so much.

That’s why we’ve put together this useful information pack to make your job as a cloth caretaker easier.

After all, we don’t want to be wishy-washy with our washing instructions.

So, here goes!

Machine Washing

Wondering if baby clothes can be washed in the machine and still remain intact and presentable?

Well, of course.

With the right quality garments that resist shedding, like our GOTS-certified organic cotton apparel, the machine is a perfectly safe option.

Gone are the days when mamas were restricted to hand washing their baby’s clothes for fear of it coming out looking like a rag or miniature piece.

Today, you’ve got the convenience of machine washing, with the added assurance of long-lasting quality.

Because, guess what, Greendigo baby clothes stay as good as new after every wash and are shrink-free too.

To make the most of your precious garments:

1.    Regulate the wash to 30 degrees. While a higher-temperature wash will not harm your clothes, it is not an eco-friendly option. You may also opt for a cold wash, on a gentle cycle.

2.    Look out for an eco-friendly detergent that is free from perfume and dye. This is an extremely important consideration as chemicals can seep into your baby’s clothing and permeate their skin.

3.    Avoid using fabric softener, as this product can reduce the flame resistance of a material and cause skin irritation or allergic reactions.

Hand Washing

While machine washing your baby’s clothes is no longer a risk with the right material and care, hand washing is still deemed the better option.

This is simply because baby clothing is smaller and way more delicate than adult clothing.

As such, if you are able to manage a hand wash, do prioritise it for garment longevity.

Here are a few best practices to get you started:

1.    Wash your hands thoroughly before handling your baby’s clothes. The last thing you need is bacteria-filled laundry water.

2.    Test the water temperature. If you hand wash clothes in extreme heat, it may cause rips and tears in the garment, as well as burn your hands. Plus, it’s better for the environment if you go lukewarm or cold.

3.    Ensure that you use a detergent that is approved for babies. And as an additional safety measure, opt for one that is chemical-free and eco-friendly.

4.    In case of a stain, don’t wait to treat it. Strip the dirty garment off your little one, rinse off the mess, and rub the stained area with a natural cleaning solution like vinegar and water.

Whether you choose to wash them by hand or machine, make sure to separate baby clothes by colour, just as you would do your own.

If you’re washing cloth diapers, that should be a separate load altogether.

After the clothes are washed, gently shake and reshape with your hands.
